器の内側・外側からソーサーまで、白い頭巾をかぶり髭をたくわえた大勢の人物を隙間なく描き込んだ、赤絵金彩のカップ＆ソーサーです。カップの見込み（内側の中心）には赤地に金の丸文を置き、ソーサーでは人物が中心から放射状に広がります。渦を巻いた把手と、赤と金で仕上げた高い脚が、華やかな絵付けを引き立てます。

紅茶やコーヒーはもちろん、飾り棚に置いても見応えがあります。同じ「綿谷製」銘のミルクピッチャー、シュガーポットと揃えると、ティーセットとしてお楽しみいただけます。

明治時代、九谷焼は欧米向けの輸出で大きく発展し、赤と金を基調にした細密な絵付けは「ジャパンクタニ」と呼ばれて人気を集めました。カップ＆ソーサーのような洋食器の形は、こうした輸出の需要から生まれたものです。

Inside and out, and across the saucer, the set is painted edge to edge with a crowd of bearded figures in white hoods, in fine red enamel and gold. A red roundel with gold scrolls sits at the centre of the cup, and on the saucer the figures radiate out from the middle. The scrolled handle and the tall red-and-gold foot set off the rich painting.

Use it for tea or coffee, or as a display piece. It matches the milk jug and sugar pot with the same mark.

In the Meiji era, Kutani ware flourished through exports to Europe and America, and its detailed red-and-gold painting became known as "Japan Kutani". Western shapes such as cups and saucers were made for this export market.
